19th Century Yellow Glazed French Confit Pot 33cm
19th Century French Confit Pot 'Confit' comes from the French verb 'confire' which means 'to preserve'.
The jars were either stored in a cold larder or buried in the ground up to the glaze line French confit pots were made in various regions of France, most notably the Southwest, which is where the confit method originated.
Different regions are associated with specific colours and styles, such as the classic ochre glazed pots from Gascony and other southern areas, and green-glazed ones often found north of the Loire river.
Some were also made in specific factories like the Gres De Bonny factory in Bonny-sur-Loire.
Ochre Confits - Southwestern France: This is the most famous region for confit pots, including Gascony, due to its history with confit de canard (duck confit).
Yellow Confits – Southeast Frace Provence
Green Confit - These often come from north of the Loire river.
Our favourites are ochre confits with splashes of green glaze which are much harder to find
